This year, Google marks two decades of Google Earth, the revolutionary tool that has changed how we see and interact with our planet.

Google Earth celebrates 20 years of exploring our world

Over more than twenty years, Google Earth has reached numerous milestones, from being downloaded over 100 million times in its first week in 2005 to helping users explore the world from their computers, with over 2 billion searches last year alone. Since its inception, Google Earth has been more than just a map.

It proved crucial for first responders after Hurricane Katrina in the US. Scientists have employed its detailed satellite images to discover new coral reefs and even a new human ancestor species. Additionally, the remarkable story of Saroo Brierley, who used Google Earth to reunite with his long-lost family—an inspiring journey that became the film Lion—highlights its impactful role.

To celebrate this special anniversary, Google is thrilled to introduce a much-anticipated new feature: historical Street View imagery now accessible within Google Earth. This enables users to explore the past and observe how locations have evolved over time, providing a distinctive view of our constantly changing world.

This latest update introduces a host of powerful features, including the popular Timelapse function that visualizes global change, along with a suite of creation tools. These tools enable users to tell their own stories through custom maps and tours.

Google Earth has become an indispensable tool for professionals in fields ranging from urban planning to solar panel evaluations. Over the past 20 years, its global community of millions of users has shaped it into what it is today.

As Google Earth opens a new chapter, the company eagerly anticipates the discoveries and stories that will emerge as people continue to explore our world together.
