Warm, soft, and golden for much of the year — especially in the early morning and late afternoon.
In cities like Valencia, Seville, Barcelona, and Granada, you’ll find a mix of old-world charm and modern beauty. Meanwhile, smaller towns and coastal areas offer a slower pace, fewer crowds, and more space for little ones to run around between shots.
Whether you’re here for a summer holiday, a spring break, or a spontaneous weekend trip, Spain offers plenty of beautiful, relaxed settings for capturing authentic family moments.
When to Book the Shoot During Your Trip
One of the most common questions I get is: When should we schedule our photoshoot?
Here’s what I usually recommend:
- Early in your trip: Everyone is usually more rested, excited, and energetic at the beginning of the holiday — and you’ll have your edited photos ready to share or print before you even leave Spain.
- Golden hour: The hour after sunrise or before sunset offers the softest, most flattering light. If you have little kids, sunrise shoots can be especially magical (and quiet).
- Rest days: If your itinerary is packed with sightseeing, pick a day with no major plans so everyone feels relaxed and unhurried.
What to Wear for a Family Shoot While Traveling
You don’t need a suitcase full of new clothes to look great in your photos. Comfort and coordination are key.
Here are a few simple tips:
- Stick to light, neutral, or earthy tones: These complement Spain’s natural colors and warm light.
- Avoid large logos or neon colors: They can distract from faces and don’t always photograph well.
- Keep it breathable: Especially in warm months, cotton and linen are your best friends.
- Go barefoot on the beach: If you’re near the coast, leave the sandals behind and keep it natural.
Bonus tip: if you’re planning a maternity photoshoot during your trip, pack a flowy dress or something that makes you feel beautiful and at ease.
Choosing the Right Location in Spain
There are endless options for backdrops across the country, but these are some of my favorites for family shoots:
Valencia
From the palm-lined Turia Gardens to the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, and the wide sands of Malvarrosa Beach, Valencia offers a little bit of everything in a very walkable, family-friendly setting.
Andalusian white villages
Places like Frigiliana, Mijas, and Zahara de la Sierra offer beautiful streets, flower-filled balconies, and incredible light.
Coastal hideaways
Try the lesser-known coves in Mallorca, the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote, or the quiet fishing towns of Costa Brava for a peaceful beach vibe.
Countryside and olive groves
If you’re venturing inland, the rural landscapes of Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, or the vineyards of La Rioja can offer stunning golden light and wide-open spaces for relaxed sessions.

Make It an Experience, Not Just a Photoshoot
The best family photos aren’t about perfect poses — they’re about real connection. Let your kids be themselves. Laugh together. Pick flowers, chase waves, play in the sand. The more natural it feels, the more genuine the results.
I always encourage families to treat the shoot like a fun part of their holiday, not something to get through. Often, the best photos happen in between “poses” — when you’re comforting your toddler, whispering something silly, or walking hand-in-hand at sunset.
Work With a Local Photographer
